Moldovan Academy of Sciences needs urgent reform, MP
If the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (ASM) isn’t reformed as soon as possible, there will be problems in the relations with European institutions. At the moment, ASM isn’t eligible on European level, according to MP Veaceslav Ionita, head of the parliamentary commission for economy, budget and finance. His statement is a reaction to an open letter of the scientific community that criticizes the 50 million lei budget cut for science in 2013.
“We have a lot of universities where real science is done. We have independent centers that do applied science. The spending of public funds must reflect this. The Academy of Sciences gets a lot of money, but no results are visible . In three years, I didn’t see any initiatives from it. How is it that independent centers provide assistance without being funded from the budget and the ASM knocks at the door only once a year, when the budget is approved?”, Veaceslav Ionita told Info-Prim Neo.
The MP says that what is needed is a Council of Science, formed of representatives of all scientific centers. “Besides being an MP, I’m also a university professor. I was unpleasantly surprised when I saw that my published materials, financed by the Academy of Economic Sciences or the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” were presented by the ASM as its own works. If we don’t reform ourselves, Europeans will regard us as savages”.
Recently, the scientific community has issued an open letter to the country leaders, warning that Moldovan science was in danger and that reducing the budget would leave a part of scientists without a living. The letter asks the President to not ratify the Budget Law for 2013 in its current form.
