Moldovan young people win International Parliamentary Scholarship
Three young persons from Moldova will benefit from five-month internships in Germany as part of the International Parliamentary Scholarships program, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Twenty-five persons took part in the contest in Moldova. Eight went through to the final, but only three of them will go to Germany.
The program, run by the German Bundestag in cooperation with Humboldt University in Berlin, involves 15-week placements with members of the German Bundestag. The participants will be actively involved in formulating speeches, articles and letters, as well as briefing papers. They will also accompany their Bundestag member to meetings and gain an insight into the political processes in Germany.
In a news conference on the issue, Head of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu stressed that the program is an additional chance given to the young people, who can gain first-hand experience in Germany’s system of parliamentary government.
MP Wolfgang Bornsen, a member of the German delegation that selected the participants, said the young people participating in the program will be able to easier engage in the political life and work for their own country when returning home. He highlighted that the project contributes to the development of the relations between the states.
The German MP also said that Moldova has real chances of becoming part of the Western Balkans package, but for this to happen it must have a functional and stable economy.
The conference was attended by one of the participants in last year's program. Andrei Zapanovici said the internship was a unique experience for him and he saw real democracy in Germany.
Moldova is taking part in the program for the third time. The scholarships have been offered to university graduates who know German from Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe and from the United States since 1990. The application forms are available at the German Embassy in Chisinau at the start of December every year.
The scholarship includes a monthly allowance of 450 euros, free accommodation, as well as healthcare, accident and personal liability insurance. The costs of travel to and from Berlin are covered too.
The program will run from March 1 to July 31, 2010. 120 scholars from 27 countries will participate in the program next year.
