Moldovans abroad can register online for September referendum

The citizens of Moldova with the right to vote who are abroad can register beforehand for the consultative referendum planned for September 24 as of July 11, 2017. Thus, the Moldovan citizens are invited to register through the website www.alegator.md or by submitting one or several written applications to Moldova’s embassy or consular office in the country where they now live, IPN reports.

According to the Central Election Commission, the online form is completed for one person, while the written applications can be signed by a number of persons. Later, the voters registered through the website will receive confirmation of registration on the email address indicated in the form. The deadline for registering for the national consultative referendum of September 24 is August 9.

The citizens who registered beforehand will be automatically struck off the main electoral registers at the place of domicile in the Republic of Moldova, but this will be done only for the national consultative referendum of this year.

After the registration period is over, the information about the number of citizens who were registered beforehand to vote abroad will be transmitted by the CEC to the Government for taking a decision about the number of additional polling places that will be established outside embassies and consular offices.

The preliminary registration will enable to determine the estimative number of persons who will vote abroad on the referendum day so as to set up additional polling places abroad and will be used when compiling the voter rolls and when deciding the number of ballots that will be distributed to these polling places.
