Moldovans in favor of teaching religion in schools as optional subject
Religion should be studied in schools as an optional subject, consider 76% of the respondents of the Public Opinion Barometer for April-May 2010, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Most of those questioned are in favor of introducing religion in schools, while 15% are against. The rest do not know if this is good or not.
60% of the respondents who are in favor of teaching religion in schools consider this subject should be optional. 13.8% of those polled said religion should be a mandatory subject only in the primary school, 10% said this about the fifth-ninth grades, while 19% said it should be obligatory in the tenth-twelfth grades as well.
77% of the respondents said there should be taught the Christian-Orthodox religion, while over 20% said every child must have access to religious education depending on their orientation. 2% consider the students should be taught the History of Religions.
The Public Opinion Barometer was conducted by the Public Policy Institute with the financial support of Soros Foundation Moldova. The survey was carried out between April 24 and May 14. It covered a sample of 1,115 persons from 75 settlements. The margin of error is about 3%.
