More than half of the inhabitants of Chisinau municipality with the right to vote support Moldova’s union with Romania. In the public consultations on the issue staged by the European Social-Politic Center during April 1-19, 55% of the residents of Chisinau said they are for the union, while 45% said they are against.

In a news conference at IPN, Doctor of Sociology Andrei Dumbraveanu said most of the supporters of the union live in Botanica district of Chisinau. Of all the persons interviewed in this district, 62% said they are for the union. In Ciocana, 57% of those surveyed are for, while 43% are against. Some 55% of the residents in Buiucani and 53% of the residents in Centru said they are for the union. In Rascani district, the ratio was 50%: 50%.

The public consultations held by the European Social-Politic Center also showed that 61% of the inhabitants of the suburbs of Chisinau municipality arte for Moldova’s union with Romania, while 39% are against. Of all the questioned Romanian-language speakers, 62% said they are for the union. This percentage among the Russian-language speakers stood at 31%. Andrei Dumbraveanu said the data show that unionism in the municipality of Chisinau witnesses an upward trend. This exercise opens new prospects and shows that the people become more unchained.

Gheorghe Costandachi, president of the European Social-Politic Center, noted that there were interviewed 79,741 inhabitants of Chisinau aged over 18. This figure represents over 10% of the population of Chisinau municipality. The public consultations were a free, equidistant and neutral project and were commissioned by no one. A nationwide public consultation on Moldova’s union with Romania will be staged after the new local elections of May 20.

Six tents were put up in Chisinau for public consultations. Simultaneously, over 300 interviewers went from home to home to find out citizens’ opinions about the union. The inhabitants of Chisinau municipality could also state their opinions through the platform decid.md.
