The bus traveling on the Morenii Noi – Ungheni, involved in the accident that killed 13 people, had its entire brake system defective, including the hand brake. The bus’ defects were known both the mechanic who checked the bus’ state daily, as well as to the driver. These are the conclusions of experts from the Ministry of Interior. Victoria Popov, prosecutor at Ungheni district Prosecutor’s Office, told Info-Prim Neo that, preliminarily, it had been established that the bus had a defective front-right brake. Thorough investigations have shown that the front-left and the back brakes were also defective. Moreover, the driver’s hand brake was also broken. It is assumed that the driver used to stop the bus by shutting off the engine. Experts say that these technical violations have existed for a long while, and surely both the mechanic and the driver knew about them. In spite of this fact, the mechanic used to sign the itinerary sheet after each technical inspection, and the driver would take the bus out as usual. The prosecutor mentioned that part of the bus’ steering wheel detached and the driver lost control couldn’t maneuver within the curve and drifted into the ravine. Criminal proceedings were started on this case, for the exploitation of transportation means with obvious technical faults. The mechanic risks a fine between 200 and 700 conventional units, or up to 3 years of jail, in both cases with (or without) privation of the right to work in positions responsible with ensuring the technical safety of transportation means, or their exploitation, for a period between 2 and 5 years. Meanwhile, law enforcers claim that the deceased driver of the bus was also guilty of the accident. The accident happened on Thursday, August 9, near Moreni (Ungheni district). The Mercedes-Benz bus, which was serving the Morenii Noi – Ungheni route, did not enter a curve correctly, thus drifting off the highway and into a ravine. As a result, 13 people died, including 2 minors.
