Liberal lawmaker Victor Popa, who heads the legal commission for appointments and immunities, called on the parliamentary groups to designate candidates for the two vacant posts of judge in the Constitutional Court (CC). The Liberal faction is the only one that put forward a candidate. This is Victor Popa, IPN reports.
Two of the six constitutional judges are proposed by the Government, two by Parliament, and another two by the Supreme Council of Magistrates. The tenures of the judges named by the legislature expired on February 23. However, the legislation does not stipulate a deadline by which the legislative body must appoint new judges.
Victor Popa said the CC can work with at least four judges of the six, but the three institutions must be obligatorily represented. The Court now includes two judges designated by the Supreme Council of Magistrates, two judges named by the Government and no person representing Parliament.
The press reported that Victor Popa will be named CC judge if the Liberal Party votes in favor of Vlad Filat as Prime Minister. The Liberal MP denied these reports, saying the party will not vote for Vlad Filat, regardless of the circumstances.
