The new national integrated border management strategy approved recently by the Government of Moldova provides for the gradual integration of Moldova into the European area of freedom, justice and security, director general of the Border Guards Service Alexei Roibu said in a news conference on Monday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to Alexei Roibu, the strategy will contribute to an increased security level, will simplify border crossing for travelers and goods and will support the liberalization of the visa regime with the EU. “This can happen only with the support of the local and central public authorities, civil society, the EU partners, the neighboring countries and international organizations,” the director of the Border Guards Service said.
The Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel said that all the modern states must be based on an economy that is open to international trade and provides increased security for the people. “The integrated border management strategy plays an important role in the efficient combating of illegal migration, human trafficking and other crossborder-related offenses and contributes to the simplification of the border control procedures,” said the Ambassador.
Udo Burkholder, the head of the EU Border Assistance Missions to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM), said the Government of Moldova approved the national integrated border management strategy last week. Several weeks ago, the Governemnt of Moldova also adopted such a strategy. “The introduction of EU standards in border management is a priority for both of the states. The EUBAM will continue to provide assistance in this area,” said Udo Burkholder.
An international conference themed Integrated Border Management opened in Chisinau on Monday and will close on Tuesday. The event is organized by the EUBAM and the Border Guard Service of Moldova.
