New deadlock reached in negotiations on formation of ruling alliance

The dispute about the right to suggest the candidate for Prime Minister led to a new stalemate in the negotiations on the formation of a ruling alliance between the PLDM, PDM, PL and Iurie Leanca’s group. In the talks held in the evening of December 14, the PLDM claimed the right to nominate the candidate for premiership. This caused a harsh reaction on the part of the PDM and PL, IPN reports.

“We are shocked by the condition imposed by the PLDM. If until now we discussed only the fielding of an apolitical person for premiership, today they rejected the formula that has been used for six years – from up to down, based on the number of seats – and reserve the exclusive right to propose the candidate, who should be unaffiliated or political. It is the PDM that should propose a candidate,” the leader of the PDM Marian Lupu said after the talks.

The Liberals’ leader Mihai Ghimpu also expressed his bewilderment at the PLDM’s condition. “Until recently they said that we must choose together a candidate for Prime Minister and this should be politically unaffiliated. Today they proposed something else. We only discuss and there are no results. After they insisted on a politically unaffiliated MP for a month, they now want something else. I think the deadlock is caused by the PLDM,” he stated.

The acting chairman of the PLDM Valeriu Strelet said they already have a candidate for premiership. “We are waiting for the other parties to give their consent and to pronounce on the plan of action for re-forming the state institutions. This should be a common objective that must be reached,” he said.

The negotiations will continue on December 15.
