Nicolae Timofti swears to respect Constitution and defend democracy
“I swear to give all my power and skills for the prosperity of Moldova, to respect he Constitution and the country’s laws, to defend democracy, the human rights and fundamental freedoms, the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Moldova,” the new President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti pledged in the swearing-in ceremony, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Nicolae Timofti was met by the Guard of Honor. The ceremony was opened by Acting President and Head of Parliament Marian Lupu. The chairman of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tanase read the Court’s decision on the validation of the March 16 presidential elections and handed over the presidential ribbon to Nicolae Timofti.
Nicolae Timofti said that he will try to be a good President, will promote the European values and will unite society. “Today is an important day when our country enters a new development stage. It is a stage in which Moldova must make progress on the path to democracy and reforms. It is a great honor and responsibility for me to take over the presidency in a crucial moment for the country’s development,” he stated.
Marian Lupu congratulated the President in the name of the whole nation, saying today’s event is of historical importance. “It is a new stage within which all the branches of power will have to unite efforts so as to achieve the government objectives. We have yet a lot of work to do and this day marks a qualitatively new stage in the modern history of Moldova,” he said.
Nicolae Timofti was elected head of state by the votes of 62 MPs of the 101. The Communist parliamentary group did not take part in the elections and the investiture.
