Norway offers another €30 million in support to Moldova

Norway is offering Moldova €30 million in additional financial support. During her visit to Oslo, President Maia Sandu stated that this non-reimbursable aid will contribute to strengthening energy security and improving the education sector.

“Moldova appreciates the generosity of the Norwegian people, who has supported us in crucial moments to overcome the multiple challenges we faced and help us to strengthen our resilience”, declared the Moldovan president.

Over the past two years, Norway has offered consistent support to Moldova. With the start of the war in Ukraine, through UN agencies and other international organizations, it provided humanitarian support to support Ukrainian refugees and their host communities. Norway also contributed funds to buy natural gas and support the country’s war-torn economy. As a sign of this increasingly close bilateral relationship, Norway has announced that it will open a diplomatic office in Chisinau this summer.

Also today in Oslo, Energy Minister Victor Parlicov and his Norwegian counterpart, Terje Aasland, signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen Moldovan-Norwegian energy cooperation and create mutually beneficial investment opportunities. The actions set out in the memorandum include mutual benefits in the social, economic and environmental fields, which aim to promote sustainable development and decarbonization of economies. The memorandum also provides for measures regarding the digitization and security of the energy sector.

Maia Sandu is on an official visit to the Kingdom of Norway during May 6 and 7 on the invitation of King Harald V and Queen Sonja, marking the first official visit of a Moldovan president to Norway.
