Number of health policy-based heart surgeries higher last year

The number of heart surgeries whose costs were covered with money from the mandatory health insurance funds in 2017 was higher than a year ago. According to the National Health Insurance Company, last year the medical institutions contracted by the Company performed over 5,600 heart operations, up 2,000 compared with 2016, IPN reports.

Over 4,400 of these were minimally invasive procedures in adults who suffered from myocardial infarction, 30 were minimally invasive operations in children and were performed in Moldova for the first time, while 1,200 were other types of heart surgery. Over 140 million lei was allocated for all the operations, which is by almost 30 million lei more than in 2016.

In 2017, the National Health Insurance Company also financed 112 cases within a new program entitled “Electrophysiology study and ablation procedures” through which an innovative method was applied to diagnose and treat heart rhythm disorders.
