Renatas Norkus, the Chairman of the Permanent OSCE Council, is calling on Chisinau and Tiraspol to show flexibility and look for acceptable solutions in settling the Transnistrian issue, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I had a highly productive three-day visit to both Chisinau and Tiraspol and the central subject discussed was that of the Transnistrian conflict settlement. The OSCE supports peaceful negotiations for a solution which respects the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and which is acceptable to people in Transnistria”, Renatas Norkus told a news conference on Saturday in Chisinau.
Renatas Norkus stated OSCE's position is that democratic reforms are necessary in Moldova so that the country becomes attractive, including for people living on the eastern side of the Nistru. The OSCE supports the contacts between the main negotiators and the high-level meetings between the authorities in Chisinau and Tiraspol.
“We support the confidence-building measures and the resumption of rail transportation and phone connections, which will create the necessary impetus to starting formal negotiations”, said Renatas Norkus.
The OSCE hopes that the resumption of formal 5+2 talks will be possible in September.
The OSCE, currently chaired by Lithuania, has sent a delegation to Moldova to ascertain the chances of resuming formal negotiations on the Transnistrian conflict settlement.
