Over 5,000 people voted in Chsinau by 8am

All the 306 polling places in the municipality of Chisinau were opened at 7am without incidents, the Chisinau District Electoral Council has said. Over 5,000 people or 0.8% of the voters put on the electoral registers cast theri ballots by 8am, IPN reports.

The main voter rolls in the municipality of Chisinau include 631 678 voters. Of these, 136 385 are in Botanica district, 91 411 in Buiucani distrcit, 71 806 in Centru district, 95 098 in Ciocana district, 117 731 in Rascani distrcit, and 119 247 are in the suburbs. In the suburban communities, in Condrita the voter turnout is the lowest, of only 55 electors, while in Durlesti is the highest, of 18 804 electors.

The voter rolls for the new mayoral elections held in seven communities on May 20 include 749 272 people. The polling places opened at 7am and will be closed at 9pm.

For the elections to be valid, the voter turnout should be of at least one fourth of the voters. The candidate who gains more than half of the votes wins the elections. If no one gathers the necessary number of votes, runoffs are held in two weeks for the two candidates who obtained most of the votes. If the elections are invalidated or nullified, they are rerun in two weeks based on the voter rolls and with the same candidates.
