Papuc concerned about work of the police

“I'm very concerned about the work of the employees of the Ministry of the Interior,” former Minister of the Interior Gheorghe Papuc said on June 16, without specifying the reasons for his concern. Papuc said that when he headed the Ministry, employees' salaries were raised several times, but now they are reduced. “I don't think there are people who want to put their life in danger when keeping law and order for 1,500 lei a month. A newcomer should have a pay of at least €500,” he said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Asked about the millions of lei appropriated from the Ministry, over which he is now tried, Gheorghe Papuc said he does not bear responsibility, stressing that when he came to the Ministry he found a disaster there. “The police commissariats did not have windows and doors, special equipment and cars. I focused on the reformation of the Ministry's apparatus, education of the employees and repair as the police is the face of the society,” he said. Gheorghe Papuc on June 16 attended a new hearing held at the Centru court. He stands trial for misconduct in office during the April 2009 events and over the appropriation of funds from the Ministry of the Interior.
