Parliament appoints Marian Lupu president of Court of Auditors

Marian Lupu is the new president of the Court of Auditors. He was confirmed to post by Parliament for a five-year term. Marian Lupu told the MPs he needs two months to draw a conclusion about the state of affairs at the Court of Auditors and, if need be, he will formulate proposals for amending the legal and institutional frameworks so as to improve the institution’s performance, IPN reports.

Asked by Liberal MP Valerian Bejan what he aims to do as president of the Court of Auditors, Marian Lupu said he will make effort for the role of this institution to grow. “I refer not to the Court’s interest, but to the interest of the citizens and the sovereign and independent Republic of Moldova,” stated Marian Lupu.

Asked by the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin how he would react to instructions, the new president of the Court of Auditors said the only instruction that can be given to the Court from outside is to examine a request based on a Parliament decision. In all the other cases, private individuals or legal entities, the Premier, the Head of State or the Speaker cannot interfere.

Marian Lupu was proposed for the post by the Parliament’s commission on economy, budget and finance. He was the only aspirant for the post. He replaced Veaceslav Untila, who was named director of the National Agency for Energy Regulation also today.

Moldova’s Parliament on February 7 held the first plenary sitting of the spring session. This is the last session of the Parliament of the 20th legislature whose mandate expired on November 30, 2018. Under the Constitution, the mandate is extended until the new legislative body is formed legally. The legislative elections were set for February 24, 2019.
