Parliament initiates probe into demolition of landmark buildings
Parliament has voted to create an inquiry commission to investigate cases of demolition and damage of historical landmark buildings included in the Registry of State Protected Landmarks. The commission is to present its findings on 1 March 2013, Info-Prim Neo reports.
MP Chiril Lucinschi, head of the parliamentary Commission on Culture, said the inquiry commission was created in response to “the dramatic situation a great part of our cultural heritage and the looming disappearance of the historical part of Chisinau”. He argued that an intervention at the highest level was needed to stop the destruction of the urban cultural identity of the country.
Forty state protected landmark buildings were destroyed between 2006 and 2011. Since the beginning of 2011, six cases of demolition and damage of protected landmarks have been registered.
MP Ghenadie Ciobanu was elected head of the inquiry commission and Corina Fusu will be its secretary. Other members are MPs Alexandr Petcov, Constantin Staris, Inna Supac, Zurab Todua, Elena Frumosu, Nae-Simion Plesca and Iurie Bolboceanu.
