Parliament requests that protest organizers should pay for damage caused on January 20

The Parliament’s Secretariat addressed a letter to the Party of Socialists, the Political Party “Our Party” and the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth”, requesting that these should pay for the damage, assessed at about 750,000 lei, caused during the January 20 protest. Contacted by IPN, the Parliament’s secretary general Ala Popescu said that if need be the legislative body will go to court to seek damages.

Ala Popescu said that a commission consisting of building specialists and employees of the legislature’s guard service was set up on January 21. This assessed the caused damage at over 750,000 lei. The letter says that a part of the Parliament’s property was destroyed during the protest, such as doors, chairs, armchairs, tables, walls and the protection fence of the building site.

Ala Popescu noted that the letter was addressed to the three parties because their representatives announced that they took part in the protest in which damage was done.

The Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon, who published the received letter on a social networking site, expressed his indignation at such a decision. “Today we received a letter from Parliament, which says that the Party of Socialists and its protest leaders should pay for the damage estimated at 750,000 lei caused during the so-called ‘pogroms’ staged in the Parliament Building on January 20. They have no fear!” he stated.

On January 20, a crowd of people came together before the Parliament Building during the vote for the Filip Government. The people protested against the investiture of the new Cabinet and when this was voted in, they surrounded the Building and went in.
