Parliament will try to elect President today

The procedure for electing the head of state in Parliament will start today, December 16, at 2pm. Marian Lupu is the only candidate for the presidency, fielded by the Alliance for European Integration. In order to elected, Marian Lupu needs to gain at least 61 votes of the 101 possible, Info-Prim Neo reports. The AEI has only 58 votes. Unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea said he will give his vote for Marian Lupu only if all the ten conditions put forward by him are accepted by the ruling alliance. The PCRM’s Central Committee will hold a plenary meeting at 11am to decide if the Communist lawmakers will take part in the voting or not. The group of Socialists in Parliament, which consists of three MPs who left the PCRM, said they will cast their ballots, but will vote against Marian Lupu. The member parties of the AEI agreed to sign an annex to the constitution agreement, before the presidential elections, whereby they will pledge not to form coalitions with the PCRM. Before the special sitting of the legislature, the special commission for the election of the head of state will convene to decide if the MPs will have to show or not their ballots when going out of the polling booths, as the PDM proposed. At least 61 MPs must take part in the voting for the elections to be validated.
