PAS’ decision to support Socialist nominee for Speaker brings uncertainty, opinion

The decision to support a Socialist candidate for Parliament Speaker taken by the Party “Action and Solidarity” brings uncertainty. This is very surprising as the PAS leader Maia Sandu and the PPDA leader Andrei Năstase transmitted messages that looked credible and had a persuasive tone that didn’t leave room for separate decisions similar to the one taken by the PAS, journalist Constantin Olteanu was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel.

According to the journalist, the PAS’ decision looks more like betrayal. The constituent parties of the Bloc ACUM pledged not to form a formal or informal alliance with the Democratic Party, the Party of Socialists and other parties. Under their commitment, if this promise is broken, the Bloc members will vacate their seats of MP. “This commitment assumed before the citizens of the Republic of Moldova was violated today,” he stated.

Political commentator Roman Mihăeș said it is important to note that the meeting of the National Political Council of the PAS was announced only several hours before the meeting. The PAS analyzed very attentively the situation after the two rounds of discussions held with the PSRM. They say Andrei Năstase wanted to have separate discussions with the Socialists and tried to bargain so that the Socialists obtained the post of Prime Minister and the post of Speaker remained to him.

“Those from the PAS were informed and thus gave a counterblow. In politics, things never happen accidentally. I think the step taken today by the PAS is a response measure against Andrei Năstase’s attempts to change the rules of the game as the PAS’s decision was taken without being coordinated by the PPDA and the party broke the agreement on the constitution of the Bloc ACUM, which says that all the decisions are taken by the Bloc’s Council,” stated Roman Mihăeș.

On June 5, the National Political Council of the PAS decided it will vote for the Socialist Party’s nominee for Parliament Speaker by a 46 to 1 vote. The Standing Political Bureau of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” took notice of the decision of the National Political Council of the PAS and decided to convoke its National Political Council for June 6. The hour and place of the meeting weren’t made public.
