The Communist MPs, in the March 13 meeting of the legal commission for appointments and immunities, asked reviewing the laws condemning the Communist symbols that were adopted last July. The request was made following a notice from the Venice Commission, which said that the adoption of the two laws is unconstitutional.
“The Venice Commission stated its position very clearly. This notice is a motive for the Constitutional Court to pronounce on the given case,” said Communist MP Antolie Zagorodnyi.
The commission’s head Victor Popa said that the bills were already examined by the commission and were sent to the Parliament’s Standing Bureau for reexamination.
As regards the Constitutional Court, Victor Popa said that in order to become fully functional, two judges whose tenure expired must be replaced. Asked by the journalists if it’s true that the Liberal Party wants to put him forward for this post, Victor Popa said that as a Doctor of Constitutional Law he can fulfill such a duty.
In July 2012, the legislative body banned the use of the Communist symbols. The bills were appealed to the Constitutional Court, which is to pronounce on their constitutionality within six months.
