PDM accepts possibility of early elections

The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) said it is waiting for a positive decision on behalf of the head of state as regards the nomination of the candidate proposed by the parliamentary majority for Prime Minister, who is Vlad Plahotniuc. Otherwise, it is ready for early elections, IPN reports.

In a press release, the party says that if the head of state does not honor his obligations in accordance with the Constitution and does not nominate the parliamentary majority’s candidate for premiership, the PDM will ascertain a major political and institutional stalemate that risks turning into a profound political crisis.

“We already ascertain that the situation in the country is close to destabilization, while the prolongation of the political crisis can lead to unwanted violence. If such a dramatic scenario comes true, the fact that the early elections in Moldova is the wish of political and economic interest groups, put into practice by the head of state, will be confirmed,” says the PDM.

However, given that a relevant segment of Moldova’s population wants the situation in the country to be changed by early elections, the Democratic Party is ready to take part in a political exercise of such a kind. “We have the obligation to govern the people and to leave the people to decide the direction they want Moldova to follow further. We made all the necessary approaches from political and constitutional viewpoints to offer a constructive solution to the current crisis,” it is said in the press release.

The Democrats say they formed a consistent political majority to overcome the political crisis, but this fact didn’t suit particular parties and interest groups that hope they will enter Parliament as a result of early elections and put their narrow political interests above the country’s stability. The people are those who will make an appropriate decision by their vote, in the early elections.

On January 13, the parliamentary majority fielded Vlad Plahotniuc for the post of Prime Minister, but President Nicolae Timofti rejected him. Afterward, the majority repeatedly proposed Vlad Plahotniuc for this post.
