People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will deprive Bashkan of power, statement

The People’s Assembly of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia will manage to constitute its factions and standing commissions and to elect the deputy chairmen by the end of November. Afterward, it will dismiss the Executive Committee and will form a new one. This way, Bashkan Mihail Formuzal will remain with not much power and will be very limited in his acts. Related statements were made by the head of the Gagauz public organization “Piligrim-Demo” Mihail Sirkeli for Info-Prim Neo. Mihail Sirkeli considers that the 25 independent deputies of the People’s Assembly are not really independent. “The fact that there were registered independent candidates does not mean that they are independent. There are two political forces in the region, which do not have the status of political party, but play an important role in the region’s political life. These are “Gagauzia Noua” and “Gagauzia Unita”. The movement “Gagauzia Noua” established a partnership with the Democratic Party (PDM) and now holds a majority of seats on the People’s Assembly. The movement’s members are not members of the PDM, but ran in the elections with financial support from the Democrats,” said the head of “Piligrim-Demo”. He also said that a faction consisting of Communist deputies and an independent deputy was already set up in the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. “The Democratic Party has no member on the People’s Assembly, but will exert influence in the region through the members of “Gagauzia Noua”. I anticipate a political crisis. The People’s Assembly will try to discharge the Executive Committee,” stated Mihail Sirkeli. The tenure of Mihail Formuzal expires in 2014. The Bashkan names the Executive Committee, but it is confirmed by the People’s Assembly. Mihail Sirkeli believes that after the Executive Committee is dismissed, the Governor of Gagauzia will remain with little power and influence in the region. The elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia took place on September 9 and 23. As a result, there were elected 25 independent deputies, seven Communist deputies, two Liberal-Democratic deputies and a Socialist deputy. In the runoff vote of November 5, the deputies managed to elect Dmitri Constantinov as chairman, but could not choose the two deputy chairmen. A new round of voting will be held on November 13.
