PL leader: Don’t blackmail us
The election of the President was initiated by Lupu, Filat and Dodon, not Ghimpu, Lupu and Filat as the agreement provides, the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu said after the Liberal faction left the Parliament’s sitting on Thursday. “We are for the election of the head of state. We announced we renounce the right to file a candidate, but don’t blackmail us,” he stated, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The Liberal MPs refused to vote for holding presidential elections on March 15, arguing they should better identify a candidate for the presidency first. “We suspect that our colleagues from the alliance want one thing, while we want another thing. We want the head of state to be elected, while they want to fix the date of presidential elections,” the Liberal leader said indignant.
Valeriu Strelet, the head of the Liberal-Democratic faction, has told the press that the procedure for identifying the candidate is not so simple, but is not impossible. He said the PLDM and PDM pledged to put forward several candidates, but the Liberals act as arbitrators and will be against until they approve of a candidate.
“Everywhere in the world, they set the date of the elections and then select candidates,” said the leader of the Democrats Dumitru Diacov. “We must be open so as to avoid suspicions. But we must be realistic. If we decide to hold the elections on March 15, it does not mean that we will find a candidate today or tomorrow.”
The leader of the group of Socialists Igor Dodon said the Communists and the Liberals have something in common. “The Communists left the sitting, and then the Liberals did the same. A new parliamentary party mat stage protests in the central square of Chisinau next Sunday. It is regrettable that some MPs follow the example of the radical Communists,” he stated.
Speaker Marian Lupu suggested holding the presidential elections on March 15. The Liberals said they are against, asking examining the issue again in a week so as to find a candidate first. After the Liberal lawmakers left the assembly hall, the sitting was adjourned as a quorum was not present.
