PLDM: No constitutional referendum earlier than September 2012
The Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) is proposing a reform that would produce a new Constitution adopted in a referendum to provide a new modality of electing the president. However, according to PLDM's parliamentary faction leader Valeriu Strelet, such a reform will not be possible to launch earlier than in September 2012.
“Preparing a constitutional reform implies mobilizing the entire internal capacity of the political class as well as of society. The draft of a new constitution should be the product of joint efforts and contribution of a representative, competent and fully mandated working group”, Valeriu Strelet stated at a press conference.
He declared that a constitutional reform should not be held in a time of political instability, suggesting that today it is necessary to establish a dialogue with the opposition in order to identify a candidate for president. “The negotiations with the PCRM should have the consent of the Alliance parties. Any spontaneous individual ventures to modify the fundamental law are absolutely counterproductive”, said Strelet.
Earlier, the Liberal Party's parliamentary faction announced it would propose a new constitution drafted by the Commission fro Constitutional Reform.
