Population is urged to report violations of consumer rights

The Center for the Analysis and Prevention of Corruption (CAPC) announces the launch of the Consumer Assistance Center (CAS) in Centru region, which is a nongovernmental organization that will provide information and consultancy services to consumers and economic entities.

In a news conference at IPN, expert Viorel Parvan said the Center’s specialists will provide the consumers with information, consultancy and primary legal aid. The consumers will also be helped to seek assistance from the competent authorities so as to defend their rights.

Information services will be also offered to the competent authorities. These will be informed every time the consumers will report cases of sale of counterfeit or dangerous food products. The CAS Center will also help the consumer protection NGOs and economic entities selling food products. The Center has a lab for detecting counterfeit products or products that are past their sell-by date.

The launch of the CAS Center forms part of a project supported by East Europe Foundation. Earlier, a similar center was opened in Balti, to serve the consumers from the northern districts. On December 9, there will be launched the third centre, in Cahul, which is intended for the consumers from the southern region. East Europe Foundation contracted jurists who will provide assistance to consumers and specialists who will monitor the food operators so as to help them meet the EU standards in the field.

East Europe Foundation project coordinator Carolina Blajin said the project is aimed at adjusting the sanitary and phytosanitary policies of Moldova and Georgia to those of the EU. The project is supported financially by the EU and is co-financed by the Government of Sweden and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

CAPC head Galina Bostan said the Moldovan people can enjoy the products they deserve and it depends on them if the situation improves because now they can contribute to this by reporting the violations they witness.

The CAS Centru, based at 27 Sfatul Tarii St, of. 6, will work from Monday through Friday, between 9am and 6pm. The hotline for reporting violations of consumer rights is (022) 233 200. More information is available on the website “alegesanatos.md”.
