PPDA, LOC, Party of Change and CUB seek removal of chairman of the pre-vetting commission

The leaders of the right-wing bloc made up of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” (PPDA), League of Towns and Communes (LOC), the Party of Change and the Coalition for Unity and Wellbeing (CUB) filed a petition, seeking the removal from office of the chairman of the pre-vetting commission Herman von Hebel, over alleged evidence of lack of integrity and irreproachable reputation to occupy this position. The petition was submitted to the commission for assessing the integrity of candidates for membership in the self-administration bodies of judges and prosecutors, IPN reports.

The bloc said that on March 25, 2024, the portal www.anticorupție.md published a journalistic investigation with reference to a number of international press articles that confirm the violation of the law by the chairman of the pre-vetting commission. According to the press report, Hermen von Hebel broke the law by dismissing employees of the International Criminal Court and hid the fact that he currently serves as a judge at the Dutch Court of Appeals in Den Bosch. But this post is incompatible with membership in the assessment commission.

The bloc of right-wing parties demands to withdraw Hermen von Hebel not only from the position of chairman of the pre-vetting commission, but also from the post of member of that commission, invoking the fact that “the justice sector reform cannot be done by persons who do not meet the integrity criteria”.
