Speaker Grosu seeks resignation of MP after airport searches

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu considers that PAS MP Victoria Cazacu must vacate her seat of MP following the searches caried out at the Chisinau International Airport, as the parliamentarian’s daughter is also involved in the case of corruption and bribery, IPN reports.

“Today, the NAC informed about searches at the Airport in a case of corruption and bribery, which involves the daughter of a member of Parliament. Even if this person is presumed innocent until a court judgment is pronounced, such cases overshadow and undermine our fight against corruption. Victoria Cazacu should vacate the seat of MP in such circumstances,” stated the official.

Speaker Grosu also said that the parliamentary group of the Party of Action and Solidarity will take all measures to exclude the lawmaker from the parliamentary bodies and the group. “Corruption is a serious threat to our country and we will not tolerate such cases,” he noted.

Seven customs inspectors and a number of individuals are investigated for act of corruption. Following searches at the Chisinau International Airport, three of the customs officers were detained for 72 hours, while the others are being investigated at large. According to the National Anticorruption Center, the suspects set up a criminal scheme through which they demanded money from passengers to facilitate the illegal bringing of various goods into or out of the country.
