More than 80,000 signatures have been gathered within the campaign for collecting signatures for amending the Constitution so that it allows for the direct election of the President, by the people. The campaign “You Choose the President” was launched by the People’s Party of the Republic of Moldova (PPRM) on May 16, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the party, the PPRM put up tents in all the country’s districts and in the sectors of Chisinau municipality. Mobile teams collected signatures in over 250 settlements. Signatures were gathered in 738 settlements where the PPRM has primary organizations.

“The election of the head of state by the people is an important point in the program of the People’s Party. By this change, we want to repair a mistake that the political class made consciously, in order to get out of the people’s control and subdue one of the most important state institutions – the Presidential Office,” the party says in the communiqué.

According to it, most of the times the people who put their signatures in the lists of the PPRM say that this is a good and necessary initiative that is awaited in society. Most of the people want a President elected by them, not by the political parties.

The People’s Party of the Republic of Moldova announced that the signature collection campaign “You Choose the President” will be continued. It calls on the people to become actively involved in it and to put their signatures in favor of amending the Constitution.
