Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet demanded that the director of the National Anticorruption Center Viorel Chetraru should be dismissed. In a press briefing, the Premier stated that he made a requisition to President Nicolae Timofti, asking that the dismissal procedure should be initiated, IPN reports.
Valeriu Strelet said that to avoid possible speculations, he specifies that the list of reasons for his request, included in the application to the head of state, is topped by the rising corruption perception index despite the triumphalist statistics about the Center’s activity presented by Viorel Chetraru. There are also sufficient reasons to believe that the Center adopted a discretional and selective approach to the fight against corruption, which led to a very low output in the activity of this institution.
“An important element is also the selective approach to cases that concern the frauds committed at Banca de Economii, within which the main defendant continues to walk on the outside at a time when he himself admitted that he committed an act of active corruption. Even if somebody asked from him money, he was obliged to report this, in accordance with the law, and shouldn’t have given this money,” stated Valeriu Strelet.
According to him, it is the prerogative of the Premier to seek such a dismissal, but it is up to the head of state to decide whether to issue the dismissal degree or not. He voiced hope that this initiative will be accepted.
