President Sandu at UN Climate Change Conference

President Maia Sandu is taking part in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The head of state will deliver a speech at the high-level segment of COP29 and will have bilateral meetings with other heads of state and high-ranking officials, IPN reports.

The event is hosted by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres.

The COP or Conference of the Parties is the main international forum centering on the fight against climate change. It annually brings together heads of state and government, business and civil society organizations to coordinate global efforts and propose concrete solutions to one of the most pressing issues of the day.

The President’s press service said that COP29 will focus on financing as the global transition to a low-carbon future requires investments of trillions of dollars worldwide. These funds are essential to help countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect people affected by the increasingly severe effects of climate change.

Against the backdrop of record global temperatures and the intensification of extreme weather events, COP29 aims to mobilize international support for solutions that contribute to a safe and sustainable future, especially in countries that are vulnerable to climate change. Moldova’s participation in this conference reflects the country's commitment to environmental protection and adaptation to climate change, strengthening also cooperation with international partners.
