Members of the NGO “Pro Echitate” called on the President of Moldova Nicolae Timfoti to hasten the justice sector reform. In order to make themselves heard, they staged a dramatic protest in front of the Supreme Court of Justice on April 19. They brought a coffin, a funeral orchestra and posted ironical messages referring to judges, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vadim Ciornea, a member of “Pro Echitate”, said the idea of mounting a protest appeared after the Supreme Court of Justice judges Petru Ursachi, Ghenadii Nicolaev, Vladimir Timofte, Iurii Diaconu, and Nicolae Gordila passed a decision, whereby Nicolae Fortuna was sentenced to five years in jail for abusing his authority while he managed the insolvency process at the company Cristal-Flor, while in the case of Adrian Nichifor, who was accused of killing the brother of the former commissioner of Nisporeni district, the Court of Appeals changed the decision of the first court, which gave Nichifor 17 years in jail, for a fine of 30,000 lei for unintentional murder. “This sentence buried the last hope of a fair trial and we wanted to transmit this message by the setting we made today here. We want to stop the passing of judgments by order,” said Vadim Ciornea. “Pro Echitate” urged Nicolae Timofti to examine the case and the court decision in the case of Nicolae Fortuna so as to see the injustice done in Moldova. “We do not expect justice to be done in our country. The case of Fortuna will be sent to the ECHR. We only want Nicolae Timofti, who worked as a judge for so long, to see what’s going on and take measures,” stated Vadim Ciornea. The head of the apparatus of the president of the Supreme Court of Justice Valentin Lastavetski has told Info-Prim Neo that the protest went against the law on judicial organization, which says that any event applying to judges must take place at a distance of minimum 25 meters of the Court. The protest was described as dirty and mischievous.
