Prosecutor general suggests freeing CCCEC from executive’s influence

Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko proposed freeing the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC) from the influence of the executive. He made the proposal in Parliament after he was asked by Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu why the names of the ministers or deputy ministers involved in cases of smuggling and other offences are not made public, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Liberal lawmaker said the information presented by the prosecutor general did not cover the legal cases started against ministers, deputy ministers and department heads of the former and present Government. “How many legal cases were closed for different reasons?” he asked. “The answer to the question about the ministers and deputy ministers is simple. The investigative activity is controlled by the executive. In order to open a criminal case, we need the operative information possessed by the competent bodies. The solution is to free the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime from the executive’s influence so that it is controlled by Parliament and all the parties, including the opposition. The problem will be solved then as most of these cases are within the remit of the CCCEC,” said the prosecutor. Valeriu Zubko rendered a report in Parliament after the Premier sought his dismissal.
