Prosecutor’s report is eyewash, lawmaker
Communist MP Alexandr Petkov said the prosecutor general’s report was eyewash and asked for more information about the work of the Prosecutor General’s Office. Valeriu Zubko answered he cannot provide more information as he can influence the investigations, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We want to know more about the cases of cigarette smuggling, when large batches of cigarettes were seized and then disappeared. I think the next prosecutor general will have questions to you,” said Alexandr Petkov.
His colleague Vadim Misin said he will demand thoroughly analyzing the activity of the Prosecutor General’s Office because he considers that it violates the human rights.
The Communist MPs said that dozens of legal cases were started against them after Valeriu Zubko was named prosecutor general. Some of them were later closed, being considered groundless. “Does the Prosecutor General’s Office act like this because it does not have professionals or because it is politically dependant?” asked Communist lawmaker Sergiu Sarbu.
Unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea said the report should have been better presented in a closed-door meeting. “I’m glad you confirmed that my phone was being tapped, but I have not yet got rid of wiretapping,” he said, addressing the prosecutor.
Liberal-Democrat MP Maria Ciobanu said the report showed who controls the prosecutor. “You spoke only about some of the institutions so as not to anger your master. Mister Zubko, why do you stick to your seat if you have a blemished reputation?” she asked.
Valeriu Zubko was questioned in Parliament in an open-door meeting on October 28. He said the Prosecutor General’s Office is the target of a broad misinformation campaign. According to Valeriu Zubko, the institution lately has investigated a series of cases involving customs officials and lawmakers. He did not give names, saying he will do it only within a parliamentary commission of inquiry if the legislature sets it up.
