The refusal by the Central Electoral Commission to register the initiative group in support of the European Social Democratic Party candidate’s Valeriu Pleșca “is completely politically motivated” and “is legally baseless”, said the party.
According to PSDE, the goal was to obstruct Pleșca from running in the October 20 election.
“The government’s goal is to destroy PSDE, the alternative force that has the ability to solve people’s problems. We are the third leading political force in the country according to the results of the general local elections and the second pro-European force. We are a truly pro-European party, but this is precisely what bothers the PAS, because they are trying to monopolize this electoral segment, even though they clearly know nothing about European values and principles”, declared PSDE president Ion Sula.
PSDE’s pick for president Valeriu Pleșca declared he will not give up in the face of abuses and will defend his rights in all courts, national and international. “We are facing an undemocratic electoral exercise and we will continue to seek justice in the courts. We do not surrender! We will win because the truth is on our side”, said Valeriu Pleșca, a former defense minister.
The CEC rejected the request for registration of the initiative group to support Valeriu Pleșca, citing procedural irregularities, as well as the fact that, when he submitted the documents, Pleșca was the president of a different party than the one that designated him. PSDE representatives went to court, but the appeal was rejected as unfounded.
