Romania will seek clear European integration prospect for Moldova

Romanian President Traian Basescu will call on the European Council to offer a clear European integration prospect to Moldova. After a meeting with President Nicolae Timofti in Iasi on March 19, the Romanian head of state said the solution for guaranteeing Moldova’s security is related to the acceleration of the European integration processes, IPN reports.

Traian Basescu said Moldova was invited to sign the Association Agreement, but wasn’t given a timeframe within which it can become an EU member state. “I promised Nicolae Timofti I will demand that Moldova should receive such a guaranteed European prospect as quickly as possible,” he stated.

Nicolae Timofti said the discussions focused on the developments in the region following the annexation of Crimea by Russia. The international community describes this act as serious violation of international law. In this difficult regional context, Moldova and Romania agreed to stimulate the European integration process in Moldova.

“We spoke about the importance of Moldova signing the Association Agreement with the EU as soon as possible. Moldova requested the EU to offer it a clear integration prospect. I asked Mister Traian Basescu to support this natural wish of Moldova at EU level,” stated Nicolae Timofti.

As to the Transnistrian conflict, the Moldovan head of state said both of the sides want the atmosphere in this area to remain calm, while the approaches to be constructive.
