Romania will support Moldova at Vilnius summit

Romania will support Moldova in the European integration process, including at the EaP Summit that will take place in Vilnius this autumn, President Traian Basescu said in a meeting with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the Government, the officials discussed the political situation in Moldova and the joint projects in economy and education. Iurie Leanca underlined the importance of building the Ungheni-Iasi gas pipeline that will enable Moldova to diversify the sources of natural gas and to become part of the European energy market. For his part, Traian Basescu said the construction works will be paid by the Romania side from the €100 million offered to Moldova in assistance.

In the meeting, the officials also raised the issue of scholarships provided by Romania to Moldovan students. They reached the conclusion that the European mobility system should be tested the next academic year. This system will enable those who study in Moldova at a certain faculty to go to study in Romania at the same faculty for half a year.

Traian Basescu paid an official visit to Moldova on July 17, at the invitation of his counterpart Nicolae Timofti.
