A group of 30 senators and lawmakers of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Civic Force of the Parliament of Romania asked decreasing the consular taxes levied from Moldovans for processing documents for regaining Romanian nationality. They sent a letter to Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean, requesting that the obligation for the applicants to confirm that they possess €500 for obtaining short-stay visas for Romania should be removed, IPN reports, quoting a statement of MP Eugen Tomac, who heads the commission for communities of Romanians from outside the country’s borders.
“We consider that the diplomatic effort made by Romania to assist Moldova in the European integration process must be supplemented with definite measures in support of the Moldovan citizens, aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two states,” says the letter. Currently, a tax of €140 is charged for writing the birth or marriage certificates issued by foreign authorities in the Romanian civil status documents during a period of over six months.
For obtaining a short-stay visa for Romania, the Moldovans must prove that they possess €50 a day for the whole period, but not less than €500 or the equivalent in convertible currency.
