Romania’s financial support for Moldova will focus on important projects, Teodor Baconschi

A large part of the €100 million grant promised by Romania to Moldova will be used for large-scale projects, Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi said Friday in a news conference in Chisinau, held jointly with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Instead of making small presents, we should concentrate on major projects like the interconnection of the gas pipes for example. A feasibility study is conducted and European money can be attracted. There must be built less than 38 kilometers of pipe. The first and the rest of the tranches should go to implement large-scale projects,” said Teodor Baconschi. He also said that the Moldovan-Romanian relations developed considerably during the last year and a half. The minister voiced hope that the June 5 local elections in Moldova will strengthen internal stability so that the Government is able to finalize all the reforms expected by the EU. Iurie Leanca thanked his Romanian counterpart for the visit paid to Chisinau and for his contribution to developing the bilateral relations. “The relations between Moldova and Romania witnessed unprecedented progress during the last year and a half. This is natural for a relationship between two neighbors that have a common culture, history and civilization at the eastern border of the EU. The partnership for European integration stimulates the bilateral relations and makes then stronger,” he stated. The two ministers stressed the importance of convening an intergovernmental working meeting, which may take place in Galati at the end of June. It will involve representatives of seven ministries of Romania and Moldovan counterparts. “We must adopt a plan of action that will have a political preamble and will outline the large-scale projects that we can implement together,” said the Romanian official. The ministers agreed to create a permanent mechanism of consultancy on European matters. Teodor Baconschi said representatives of the two ministries meet rather often, but insufficiently for the bilateral cooperation. “This mechanism will help us to exchange information after paying different visits to the EU and to confer on the signals coming from Brussels,” explained Teodor Baconschi. The Romanian official has been in Moldova on May 26 and 27. He had meetings with Moldovan officials and took part in the inauguration of Romania’s consular office in Ungheni together with Iurie Leanca.
