SIS, NAC and PGO heads questioned by lawmakers

The chiefs of the Security and Information Service (SIS) and the National Anticorruption Center (NAC) - Mihai Balan and Viorel Chetraru – and acting prosecutor general Andrei Pantea were questioned by the parliamentary commission on national security, defense and public order. The three answered MPs’ questions about the recordings of telephone conversations of government officials that appeared in the media. After the questioning, some of the lawmakers said they understood how the information was leaked, Info-Prim Neo reports. After the meeting, the heads of the NAC and SIS told the journalists that they cannot answer their questions because a criminal case was started and the investigation can be compromised. The acting prosecutor general said a prosecution group was formed to determine the involvement of employees of the NAC and the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) in broadcasting the tapped conversations. Unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea, who is a member of the commission, said he understood where the recordings came from. He is skeptical that the authenticity of the recodings will be proven as Moldova does not have the necessary equipment. Commission member Ion Butmalai, of the Liberal Democratic Party, said he convinced himself that the law enforcement bodies in Moldova work defectively. Communist MP Artur Reshetnikov said the meeting was held behind closed doors at the request of those questioned. He stated that all those whose voices are heard in the recordings should be suspended from posts for the period of the investigation or should have the courage to resign. Last week, a number of media outlets received from anonymous addresses recordings of telephone conversations between the head of the Main State Tax Inspectorate Nicolae Vicol and a number of state officials.
