Socialists criticize proposal granting allowances to ambassadors’ children

The legislative proposal introduced by PAS to offer €700 monthly education allowances to ambassadors' children up to the age of 23 has been slammed as “cynical” by the Party of Socialists (PSRM).

Already approved in the first reading, the opposition party said it is ready to challenge the measure at the Constitutional Court if it becomes a law.

“At a time when hundreds of thousands of pensioners, disabled people, families with many children and single parents struggle to make ends meet, when schools and health care institutions are massively shut down, when the authorities say there is no money for heating bill relief in the cold season, the government creates a parasitic class of silver spoon kids, who will be provided with everything from childhood”, reads a statement issued by the PSRM.

The Socialists suggest the measure is designed to corrupt diplomatic staff abroad ahead of the upcoming presidential election. “Maia Sandu needs the services of ambassadors to organize the diaspora votes in the election this coming autumn. Essentially, this is a case of corruption using public money”, the party said.
