The supporters of Andrei Nastase, whose election as mayor wasn’t validated, protested in front of the Central Election Commission (CEC) during almost two hours, while the members of the Commission debated the court decisions to not validate the early mayoral elections held in Chisinau municipality. The protesters remained even when it started to rain, IPN reports.
Elena Bajura from Chisinau said she came to protest against the corrupt judiciary of Moldova and to demand that the election of Andrei Nastase as mayor should be validated. “We are the power and we are the people. Why do they hold elections for us? They should vote by themselves in such a case,” stated the woman.
Protester Irina Gaiduc said the committed wrongdoings should be stopped. “They are afraid of Andrei Nastase because he is the only one who can lead us on the right path and can improve the situation in the city. We demand that our votes should be taken into account. We, the citizens, want him to be our mayor,” she noted.
“The judiciary made a huge mistake. If they don’t correct it, it will mean that we do not have justice,” said Petru Sclifos from Chisinau municipality.
Secretary general of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Igor Grosu, who was among the protesters, said he came to ask the CEC to take sides with the voters as all the state institutions betrayed the voters. “We will continue to protest because things worsened lamentably. It is not about Andrei Nastase or another election runner. It is about our right to vote. If we lose this too, we lose everything,” he stated.
The Central Election Commission on June 29 nullified the early mayoral elections held in Chisinau in two rounds, on May 20 and June 3. A decision to this effect was taken by the votes of five CEC members of the seven attending. Commenting on the decision, PAS leader Maia Sandu said the CEC, instead of defending democracy and ensuring the observance of citizens’ rights, plays the game of a dictatorial regime. “We will oppose dictatorship. We should take to the streets and take part in this Sunday’s protest,” she stated.
