The Supreme Council of Magistracy decided to put off the deliberations on the election of Mihai Poalelungi as president of the Supreme Court of Justice until 2pm. The members and supporters of the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” and of the Political Party “Our Party”, which mounted a protest during the Council’s meeting, intend to resume the protest at the head office of the Council at 1:30pm, IPN reports.
Inga Grigoriu, member of the Platform “Dignity and Truth”, invited civil society and the press to join in and to protest against the appointment of Mihai Poalelungi when the deliberations are resumed.
Representatives of civil society called on the Supreme Council of Magistracy not to appoint Poalelungi for a new term and to examine the decisions taken by this while he headed the Supreme Court of Justice, arguing he has direct relations with the first deputy chairman of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc, who “controls the Supreme Council of Magistracy through Poalelungi”.
The protest leaders accuse Mihai Poalelungi of acts of corruption. They say this renounced the post of ECHR judge and a much higher salary namely because he is rewarded better in the country when he does justice in someone’s interests.
