Supreme Court of Justice rejects NIT appeal

The Supreme Court of Justice rejected the appeal filed by the private television channel NIT that asked suspending the Broadcasting Coordination Council’s decision to withdraw its license until the case is tried in court. The Communist Party (PCRM) described the decision as a great political challenge that goes against the legislation and all the rule of law principles, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a communiqué, the PCRM says that the court is examining the case concerning NIT in a biased way, delays the trial and adopts completely groundless decisions. “It is evident that the political pressure on this trial is enormous and the judges trying this case forgot about honor, dignity and professionalism,” it is said in the communiqué. According to the PCRM, by withdrawing the license of NIT and immediately implementing the relevant decision, the government hoped that the opposition will not be able to take thousands of people out to protests on May 1 and 9. “Despite this enormous pressure and the informational vacuum, tens of thousands of people took to the streets, showing a true civic position on the wrongdoings committed by the power,” reads the communiqué. The PCRM says that this defiance of the law will be challenged in the European Court of Human Rights. On April 5, the Broadcasting Coordination Council withdrew the broadcasting license of NIT because the channel violated the principle of plurality of opinions for a long period of time.
