Tapping of telephones only within SIS remit
The Security and Information Service (SIS) will remain the only institution empowered to tap telephone conversations. This is stipulated in a bill submitted by the Government to Parliament for adoption as a matter of urgency. Currently, the law gives phone tapping powers to the Ministry of the Interior and the Anticorruption Center too, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The tapping of phones is allowed only when the person is investigated by the law enforcement bodies. The bill authors say that many countries have only one authority empowered to tap the telephones. Deputy Minister of Justice Vladimir Grosu said that this bill makes changes to a number of legislative documents and empowers only the SIS to listen to telephone conversations.
In a meeting on January 30, members of the parliamentary commission on social protection, health and family inquired if some of the private companies and detectives can tap telephones. “Earlier, the Ministry of the Interior was able to tap phones. I don’t know if it still has the equipment. The private companies or detectives do not have the right to do it. It is illegal,” said Vladimir Grosu. Asked if the telephone of a lawmaker can be tapped, he said wiretapping in the case of an MP whose immunity wasn’t withdrawn is illegal.
