“Theft of century” is the most important event of 2015, poll

The “theft of the century” is the most important event of 2015, according to 40% of the respondents of a poll. 22% of those surveyed consider the protests mounted in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau are the events that marked Moldova’s population the most last year, while 20% said this about the creation of the Platform “Dignity and Truth”. The results of the poll carried out by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers were presented on January 19, IPN reports.

The fourth position by importance is taken by the protests staged by the Party of Socialists and the Political Party “Our Party” (18.4%), followed by the local elections of 2015 (15.7%). “All these events eclipsed in the collective memory an important event that took place in 2015 – the local elections and the appearance of new party leaders like the mayors of Balti and Orhei. The election campaign revealed many shortcomings in the local public authorities. Thus, only 15% of the population remembered these,” said the Association’s deputy head Andrei Dumbraveanu.

The poll shows the leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon is the most trusted political personality. This enjoys the confidence of 15.2% of the 44% of the respondents who mentioned the personality they trust. Renato Usatyi is trusted by 14.9%, while Maia Sandu by 9.4% of these respondents. Among the other trusted leaders are Andrei Nastase (8%), Iurie Leanca (7.4%), Vladimir Voronin  (7.1%), Ion Sturza (6.4%), Oazu Nantoi, Valeriu Strelet and Sergiu Mocanu. Over 55% of those polled didn’t answer this question.

If direct presidential elections were held next Sunday, Igor Dodon would gain 17.1% of the vote, Renato Usatyi – 16.4%, while Maia Sandu – 8.9%. “44% of those surveyed gave an answer to this question. Most of the respondents couldn’t give a cleat answer. Furthermore, only 43.8% would definitely take part in parliamentary elections if these were held next Sunday,” said the Association’s head Victor Mocanu.

If early legislative elections took place next Sunday, five parties would enter Parliament. These are: the Party of Socialists, the “Our Party”, the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth”, the European People’s Party of Moldova and the Democratic Party.

The poll was conducted in the period between January 8 and 16. It covered a representative sample of 1,191 respondents from 79 villages and towns. The margin of sampling error is 3%.
