Traian Basescu: Unionism should become political force in Moldova’s Parliament

All the unionist forces and the voters should unite at the upcoming parliamentary elections to support the National Unity Party (PUN) so that unionism has representativeness and becomes a political force in Moldova’s Parliament, PUN president of honor Traian Basescu was quoted by IPN as saying.

In a news conference on October 6, the ex-President of Romania said he was offered to support the PUN because the unionist current is rather powerful in the Republic of Moldova and can be represented in Parliament by politicians who will promote the idea of the country’s reunification.

“My objective is for this Romanian party to grow the flame of unionism in the Republic of Moldova. It is a project of major importance for the Romanians from both sides of the Prut. I’m pragmatic and understand that the union objective is an objective for tomorrow, but there should be a party that would explain the advantages of Romania’s union with the Republic of Moldova,” stated Traian Basescu.

The National Unity Party was registered with the Ministry of Justice on June 21 this year. The party’s first congress on June 25 involved 1,200 delegates and invitees from the Republic of Moldova and Romania. In this, Traian Basescu was elected president of honor of the party, while the member of Romania’s Parliament Constantin Codreanu was chosen as first deputy chairman of the PUN.
