Tree of Life staged at National Theater
Dumitru Matcovschi's “Pomul Vietii” /Tree of Life/ premiered on Wednesday at the National Theater in a new version staged by director Alexandru Cozub, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The play of the same name was written in 1977 and this is the first time that it is staged in 31 years. Dumitru Matcovschi says he is very glad that a new generation staged this comeback, praising the director for an original approach. “He is proposing another vision than what has been settled in my mind. But I am satisfied with this vision which makes the play contemporary”, says the author.
The play reflects the sorrows of the author and denounces the sins of our society. “A play is born out of conflict. Conflict gives birth to characters. This is the golden rule of playwrighting ever since Euripides. I'm glad that Sandu Cozub was able to understand my sorrows and interweave them with his. The troubles (of our society) are greater today than then. Because then we tried to resist somehow a dictatorial regime. Today we are free, yet we still are a sinful nation. We are still falling into an increasingly yawning abyss”, said Dumitru Matcovschi.
Alexandru Cozub, who is also the National Theater's artistic director, says: “I chose this play because I find it rather topical, even if it describes a society of the 1970s. Of course we treated it through the perspective of the present day, but few things have changed since then, or, to be more exact, have even worsened”.
The Tree of Life features the following actors Ion Mocanu (Grigore), Olga Gutu (Elena and Ana), Ghenadie Galca (Nichita), Ninela Caranfil (Nataluta), Alexandru Plesca (Duca) and Angela Ciobanu (Cristina). The stenography belongs to Boris Golea, the costumes are designed by Ludmila Furdui, the lights are managed by Nelly Bulat and the musical selection belongs to Alexandru Tirsu, with a theme song by Ion Aldea-Teodorovici “Sfinta ni-i casa”. The project was supported by Edelweiss Foundation.
