Unanimous vote in Parliament

Parliament approved upon a first reading, including with the vote of the opposition Communist group, two bills concerning convicts. The first, proposed by the Ministry of Justice, allows for the early release of seriously ill convicts. The second bill makes persons convicted of sex crimes against children ineligible for pardon, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Ministry of Justice's proposal is in fact an extension of a right already granted by the legislation. The Ministry proposes extending the eligibility for early release to the persons who got seriously ill before the sentence and during pre-trial detention alongside those who got sick after the sentence. The author of the second bill, Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici, said that according to statistics the incidence of reports of sex crimes against children is increasing. “Amnesties, pardons and reconciliations don't help to re-educate criminals. Such criminals can relapse”, she said. The final adoption of the bill was postponed until the next meeting after a Communist MP asked for an expert opinion by European institutions on this bill.
