The Union Council that consists of a number of nongovernmental organizations requested the Parliaments of Moldova and Romania to confirm the Union Act of March 27, 1918 and to change thus the Constitutions of the two states. The request is contained in a memorandum on the reunification of Romania that was signed by the constituents of the Union Council.
In a news conference held to mark the 95th anniversary of the proclamation of the Union, the Council’s coordinator Timofei Turcanu said the Great Romania should be restored. “Convinced that the current state of separation runs counter to the inheritance left in 1918, we consider that it must be remedied by the effort of all the political forces, civil society and state institutions,” he stated.
The memorandum says that the document on the unification of the Romanian national unitary state in 1918 was mainly the result of the powerful solidarity of the Romanian nation and the people should follow this example. The political class, civil society and the mass media from the two sides of the Prut River are asked to launch an active campaign to raise people’s awareness of the imperative of unifying the countries.
The authorities of Moldova and Romania are also requested to allocate the funds needed to restore the monument “Tower of Bessarabia’s Emancipation” located in Ghidighici village of Chisinau municipality and to erect the Memorial of Romanian Sufferings that would represent homage rendered to the Romanian martyrs of the Soviet occupation.
Vitalia Pavlichenko, chairwoman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), said that a number of events have been held in Moldova and Romania to celebrate the 95 years of the Union. They involve young people and this shows that the unification desideratum will be continued by the coming generations. According to Vitalia Pavlichenko, the reunification of Romania must take place not later than 2018, when it will be 100 years of the Union.
Gheorghe Maxian, head of the PNL’s local organization in Orhei, said that a book dedicated to Ion Pelivan for his special contribution to Bessarabia’s union with Romania and for his support to the locals will be published in Orhei.
On March 27, 1918, the Country’s Council adopted the Act on Bessarabia’s Union with Romania.
